As a newly elected councilor, I want to take a moment to speak about the importance of respectful and fact-based public discourse in our town. Every councilor has a platform, and with that comes responsibility — words and actions shape how residents feel about their government and each other.

Recently, there have been public statements that mischaracterized policies and created fear around other towns and communities. While there is freedom of speech, using an elected position to vilify policies or people can have real consequences. It can intimidate residents, misinform the public, and erode trust in our council.

As a council, we must hold ourselves accountable and ensure that our discussions are grounded in facts, civility, and transparency. Residents deserve open, respectful debate — not fear or personal attacks.

I encourage my colleagues and all members of the community to focus on collaboration, constructive dialogue, and policies that serve everyone in Agawam. This is how we build trust, integrity, and a stronger community together.
